Cheap Greenhouse Ideas
« on: February 24, 2009, 09:03 »
Morning chaps and chapettes -

I was wondering if anyone could help! The wife and I are desperate for a 'greenhouse' in our garden, but money unfortuantely dictates that we are unable to nip to b&q and source one!  :(

Would it be possible to construct a glass box, to act like a greenhouse. I was thinking something about 2m long, and about 1m from the floor, with a lift up lid. Would this work the same?

Or if anyone has any better suggestions please PLEASE let me know!!!

Thanks in advance, Spring is almost here!  :D

Yep a cold frame is your best bet. I have bodged two up from pallets, skip window frames and bits of plastic but they are not pretty. There are more sophisticated versions: http://www.gardenersown.co.uk/Garden/Garden%20Allotment/projects2.htm Or you could splash out on some treated wood and plastic sheeting. I'm sure you could do something good for a couple of quid which would look OK.
Good luck!
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Before we got the greenhouse, I knocked up a lean-to from timber bettens and polythene. It lasted the season and we had some nice toms and peppers.

It could be made to last a couple of years if you built it better than I did  :D

i have been thinking about this for a while, i had a cheap plastic tent style mini green house last year (the sort you can get from argos etc) but this summer i am planning on having a go at building one of these

http://www.buildeazy.com/greenhouse.html

will still cost a bit for polycover buy will definitly be cheaper than buying a greenhouse.

How about a plastic bottle greenhouse? But you do need a lot of bottles!

http://www.reapscotland.org.uk/reports/greenhouse v1.pdf

Or you could make cold frame walls with bottles and use plastic sheeting for top...limited life - bottles do deteriorate in sunlight but should last about 3 years.

It's not just me then!  I was lucky enough to catch a neighbour throwing out 4 'sash' windows.  Saved him a trip to the tip and gained myself a servicable cold frame.  Got the strawberries, little gem lettuce and chilli peppers in there at the moment.

A couple of months ago I came across 2 in the local bargin pages. One was 8x6 for £35.00, the other was 10x6 for £45.00. As usuall the buyer has to take them down.
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

If all else fails, try freecycle. Someone somewhere may have one sitting in their garden doing nothing although its likely to mean you need to dismantle it. I managed to source two for me and a neighbouring allotment but did build my own at home but didn't use glass as it doesn't go well with 4 young kids and 2 not so bright dogs.
