sleeping in nest box
« on: March 16, 2010, 11:40 »
Hi there, Madge and Mavis are sleeping in the nest box and poohing in there and this morning there was also a broken egg in there. Would it be ok to block the nest box off at night and open it up in the morning so they roost in the proper place?

perfectly fine to block it off. Lift them up onto the perches when they are sleepy and eventually (it may be several weeks) they should get the idea  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

I let mine sleep in the nest box - I cant see that it does anyone any harm, and its warmer in winter.  One has now moved to the perch of her own accord - but 2 remain in the nest box still.

We've blocked off the nest box for a few nights (in their new coop, a Cube) and they seem now to know not to sleep in there (although I keep forgetting!) ... besides which, they are up earlier than me at this time of year so I don't get out to poo pick early enough!
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...
