Treatment / use for small wooden crates
« on: July 21, 2013, 10:17 »
I've been given 11 small wooden crates (14" w X 12" d X 8" h). They had electrical components in them and have been shipped from India. I have been told that they were treated with something to make sure no bugs entered the UK but I don't know what the treatment was.
I want to use them but what should they be treated with (I could line them of course) and what could I plant in them? They are not quite deep enough for carrots I don't think?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

If that was me, I'd leave them outside all through the coming winter.  In the spring I'd fill some with soil and plant up any thing not edible, for the spring and summer then, leave them outside again and observe.  Another winter would probably cleanse them.  Then suck it and see.
(I'm not an expert, just my approach)

I would line them and plant them up, if something grows well happy days.

Not sure i would go for Bobs suck it and see aproach  lettuce, beetroot, radish would all be great in them. You could stack them up and do some vertical gardening

Can you paint them with wood preservative, so that it covers the treatment up - a bit like you can do with some types of asbestos?  Then line and plant up.  We are making small crates for our vegbags to go into.  ;)

Lucky you to be given them!
