Damn Cats...
« on: May 12, 2010, 16:54 »
Damn cat, at least i think it was a cat attacked one of my 2 original hens as they were enjoying the freedom of my garden.

Injured her so badly that I had to put her down. I have had Amy for nealy 2 years along with her sister Betty (aka Bhuna), who is and i would not have believed it really missing her. She has distanced herself from the other girls and keeps going to the coop and to the rocks where they used to roost when its sunny...oh she is very quiet.

That does mean though  i will have to go out and get 2 new ones at the weekend...that will be 6 now ::)

Amy

and with her sister at 10weeks old

Im so sorry :(. Are you sure it was a cat though? its very unusual for a cat to attact a fully grown chicken.

Cats will attack fully grown chickens, when we used to keep them in our garden oh had to cull 2 that were attacked, I saw the cat run off.

Oh this breaks my heart.  I am so very sorry.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

I have a very naughty golden spotted bengal who delights in chasing my five girls around the garden - but they do get their own back when they have had enough.................she has to make a swift exit up the apple tree before she is mobbed. She seems to single out the two bantams to chase particularly, think they must appear more 'do-able'

I think the fact that we have our own cat deters others, and my chickens are locked in their run during the day as the fox has been around once too often for me to trust them free-ranging when im not around.

There is also a point where a hungry cat (somebody else`s of course ) loses any fear.
They say the difference between  a tame animal and a wild one is a couple of missed meals.

Mmmmm! you are so right! my bengal is absolutely fearless, and a prolific hunter so I have to make sure I 'publicly' tell her off in front of the chickens, for chasing them, they laugh and titter at her a bit and she gets embarrassed..............it's the only way.

having seen the chickens on the farm with farm cats lurking around the cats never would dare go near any of the bantams or chickens, I just hope my cats dont go near the hens when they go free range

Did the farm you mentioned also have a cockerel about 3ft tall strutting confidently about ?
They would stop most cats. :)
