What Breed?
« on: March 06, 2008, 11:01 »
Hi,

We are thinking of keeping a few chickens in our back garden (we have a number of locations in mind, lawn, patio, unused 2nd veggy plot  :? ). Once we manage to get a chicken coop, I want to be ready to get my hens straight away  :D  and not spend weeks deciding which breed to get!

We are only thinking of keeping 2-3 hens...I have been warned I will want more!!

Which are the best breed to have? We have 2 children (8 & 5) and 4 cats that would obviously be in contact with them. We would like hens that are very friendly, good layers, not prone to go broody! and that will be happy to be confined to the run when we are not in the garden. Hens that are not good flyers would be a bonus too, for obvious reasons!

I don't want much I know! But I'm sure you will all have some suggestions!

Many Thanks!

Lucy

I'm a bit worried about this unused 2nd veggy plot. Are you really concentrating on the job in hand?
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

 It has been there since we moved in 4yrs ago, the 1st veggie plot is more than big enough for our needs! We have never done anything with it, hence why were thinking it would make good use as a chicken plot!

A mix of Cochins (for the fuzzy cuddles and friendliness) and the old reliable brown hens for egg production. A great combo in my book!!
If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.

To be honest, they're all cute and all develop a personality

We've got Brahms which are good egg layers with feathery feet which are funny when they come running up to you
