companion planting garlic with strawberries?
« on: September 21, 2008, 23:27 »
Hi, I've just planted my strawberries today and am thinking of putting garlic in the same bed to deter pests. After a comprehensive search of the internet I can't find anything saying that you should or shouldn't do this, but I'm still a bit scared.... will I end up with garlic flavoured strawberries?!!

Has anybody on here co-planted strawberries and garlic and has it turned out ok? Or should I avoid doing so?

Thanks everyone x

They won't taste of garlic.

They might not taste of anything, if you can't net them for the height of the garlic.

Rather plant nearby. :)

I read somewhere, Organic gardening mag I think, that shallots and strawbs are a good combo. I'll see if I can find the article  :D

Garlic is a great crop to grow with a lot of things as it deters pests especially carrot fly.

As far as Strawbs your main pest is mr slug.

I don't think it'll deter him but it may help to stop the odd greenfly spreading viruses.

Certainly won't make your strawbs taste of garlic. :D

I wouldn't plant them in the same bed mostly because strawberries are shallow feeders, same with garlic. They'll compete for the same food and you'll have mediocre results from both. Best to plant them in their own spots where they'll thrive.

Did you plant garlic with strawberries? How did it work out. I'm wondering the same thing-- planted garlic down the middle a bed and now wondering if I can transplant my strawberries with them.... guess I'll do some with and some apart and watch the results!

DON'T DO IT!!!!! Did I catch you in time? Phew! I've just had a look in my two books on companion planting and one of them says strawberries and garlic are a no no. The other says pyrethrum planted with them prevents pests. Hope this helps  :)

The original poster has not been online for 16 months, and as this thread was 3 years old before dirtyknees resurrected it yesterday, I suspect that further questions on here will be fruitless (like the strawberries if you do try it!).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
