"Hiccupping" Chicken
« on: August 22, 2013, 09:10 »
Morning,

One of our birds has been shaking it's head and hiccupping for about a week now. She was very withdrawn and hid away, but has come back out though the other birds are still ignoring her. She appears to be eating a drinking and her tail is back up but still has the hiccups.

Other info that may have a bearing:

The birds have all been wormed in the last fortnight.

Everyone has been off lay, last week we had 4 eggs from 10 birds.

We have just refreshed the woodchip in the run, (the coop has bedding straw in it.)

A couple of other birds had a "24 hour bug" where they looked off colour, droopy tail and hid away but it has not gone round the flock and they recovered very quickly without the hiccups.

We have twice found small amounts of some pale green, dried gloop mixed with bedding where she has perched but this is not daily.

Any suggestions please?

It could be her sneezing or coughing.  If she has a respiratory/nasal infection she will be trying to clear the blockage.  I have had to take one of my broodies to the vets as she has/had and infection.  With her though I could hear the rattle in her breathing.  She was fit and healthy otherwise with bright red comb, clear eyes, no nasal discharge and is a good weight.  She was given a steroid injection as she has had a similar problem before.  I also have oral baytril to give her each day for 7 days, she has another couple of doses left but her breathing is fine now.  There is an egg withdrawal period with medications though so you will need to take advice from your vet on that.

as with all anti-biotics you have to get them from a vet  :)
