Many Flowered Purple lawn invader
« on: June 26, 2009, 12:41 »
Our lawn has suddenly seen several patches where very short purple flowers appear (appearently for some gark green plants).  The whole plant is no higher than the grass and about as wide as a side plate.  I guess were there all the time but I've only noticed with the flowers coming out.

I haven't a clue what it is so haven't been able to determine if it's safe for the animals/kids and if not the best way to kill it.

Can any one suggest who the prime subjects might be? ???

Whatever it is I think we might have patches of it in our lawn too..... as well as a huge range of other things..  :)

When the weather is hot and dry the grass dies back but our lawn often continues to look green for longer than those of neighbours.... as the weeds are so hardy!  ;)

It adds to a lawn if you are not madly into pure green grass and bowling green finish.
Never keep your wish-bone where your back-bone ought to be.

Wouldn't be Red Clover would it ?

Our lawn has patches of it and it's more purple/lavendar than red. Looks beautiful amongst the daisies. :)

I agree.... there's nothing nicer than a lawn with a dash of character especially when everyone else around has pure brown grass!  ;)

Sounds like Selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) to me too.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Mine has moss, dandelions, ragwort, thistles, clover. And some grass. Variety is the spice of life!

However, if we don't get some rain soon, there will be nothing.

I too love my little white daisies in the lawn and the purple things which I think are selfheal.

We have a winner.... congratulations to everyone who suggested "Selfheal" from my limited and pictureless description.

I've Googled the little chap and he appears to be safe (I was worried about some friends ankle biters coming to grief - they ear everything that can' move quick enough)

Cheers all
