Help with my silkie please Update with news....
« on: October 17, 2009, 13:32 »
HE crowed this morning...... :(  Waited till the other cockerels were out of sight and did it :( :(

Oh dear......

Hi..... I was lucky enough to be given four 16 week old silkies back in the summer.

Now we know that one is deffo a cock bird.... another  is deffo a cock but is not as developed in his ways as the first.......

BUT..... now one of the two 'hens' has started to look worryingly like another cock bird.....

Opinions please :( :( :(  They are all now 25 weeks old.

And this is the one remaining..... hopefully hen bird.... she has no comb and different hair with no streamers :)

Answers on a postcard please.....  Doh!!!  forgot if you took them off of photobucket they would go off of here too

Comb and wattles have only appeared over the last couple of weeks :(

Always beware of 'free' gifts  ::)

Sadly, it's a lottery unless you know what to look for early on. I hope you get at least one hen out of the lot.

As Joy says, the photos are not showing. Have you moved them in photobucket since you posted ?

If they have wattles and a strawberry type comb they are boys.  Girls have a pom pom type head. Also boys are usually bigger and develop spikey neck feathers plus longer tail feathers.

My Betty silkie became Dave a few weeks ago.  :-)  The wattles were the first giveaway and also his  characteristics, he never crowed, but had a raspy voice.

Hello Chookie

I have three blue silkies and I have a horrible feeling they are all boys but as you know it is so difficult to tell.  I have had one black silkie hen who grew wattles albeit little wee ones but it did worry me for a while!  She's a great layer now :-)

I think your first pic is of a boy - sorry.  You do seem to have one hen.  You should be able to see her head is a much rounder pom pom - the boys have those streamers (as do my blues! Oh dear).

Hi, I have 3 silkie hens, all laying . My little partridge hen has wattles and what i would call a strawberry comb, but definitely is a hen- she started presenting herself to me and laying last month. As others have said they are hard to sex!! I would had said you had three boys and poss a hen

I had a silkie cockerel that looked very like your photo..
I too started with 4 free chicks, 2 cockerals and 2 hens.   I had to find a new home for one cockerel as they began to get very vicious with each other, I then had to find a home for the second one as he killed one of the hens.
Now I still have my last silkie hen.  I found my silkie hens were quite a bit smaller than the cockerals.

AFrench breeder told me the other day that he goes on the size of the feet, upside down, he said cockerals feet are bigger
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

Kitkat :)  I will pop out and compare the feet of my 4 chicks.... they are four weeks old now so hopefully feet will be different (0r all small) ;)

All the pics are of the same bird, bar the last one who hopefully wont desire a sex change at 8 months old!!!  ::)
