Morello cherry trees
« on: July 25, 2015, 07:21 »
I've just harvested all my morello cherries from an established fan and they made a nice pie. I'd like a few more and was wondering about what the options were for new trees and rootstocks. I have a fruit area that I'm going to put a net over and was wondering what would fit under the net. Can you get Morelos that will grow into a 6-8' bush, as this would be ideal. Does anyone grow Morelos as a small bush?

They are available on a dwarf rootstock, mine's around 6 feet.  :)

How much fruit do you get off it?

I'd say 2-3lb this year (enough for 2 litres of cherry brandy, so double last year's harvest), shared between me and the birds.  ::)  It's only 3-4 years old, and I daresay if I gave it more attention (pruning, watering, feeding regularly) I would have more....

About four years ago I planted three trees (Summer Sun, Merton Premier and Stella) on Gisella 5. I planted them in a triangle with only 2 feet between the stems to produce a single dense bush. The idea being that they would produce about the same harvest as a single bush but over a longer period as they are supposed to fruit successively.

The successive aspect doesn't really work, but I took about 15lb of cherries off them this year. The total height is about 8 feet and the total spread about the same, so it grows as one large bush.

I've never fed or watered the plants and they seem happy enough, producing new growth and higher yields each year.

Netting is essential to get any crop though.
