Watering
« on: June 17, 2011, 08:37 »
Dear All,

I'm looking for advice about watering frequency and volume. As I read the posts there seem to be two methods of watering that people are using, infrequent heavy watering and daily watering. Here's what I do and I'd like peoples take on it.

Anything in a pot gets watered pretty much every day that it doesn't rain.
Anything that's germinating gets watered every day that it doesn't rain.
Water hungry plants like squash get a soaking every couple of days.
As for the rest, I use a moisture gauge to check if the soil is damp at root level and if it is, I don't give them anything.

My patch is very dry on top, but you only need to go down about 3 inches to get to the start of the moisture. Go down another 3 and it's nice and cool and damp.

How do you water your plot and what do you think?

your moisture guage would be handy for pots as well, cos sometimes they are soaking at the bottom and dry on top.
Germinating seeds need to be dampish, not soaking or they can rot off, so unless it's very hot..or you're in a drought situation, water the drills before sowing and they should be ok for a few days at least.
I find it's easy with modern multipurp compost for seed trays and modules to be soaking wet and the seed doesn't germinate too well, so they get a little squirt from a water bottle, rather than a soaking.
If the ground is damp below 3 ins, then even your pumpkins shouldn't need watering....feeding yes, so a liquid feed maybe  :)

All in all things need moisture, but not to be soaking wet IMO :)

Thanks for the advice. It's been raining solidly here for the last 6 hours so I won't need to do anything for a while.
