Title: What preservative to use??
Post by: Planner on June 24, 2008, 19:08
Hi - Quick question

Whats the best wood preservative to use on the coop both internally and externally.

Obviously needs to be chook friendly but also "does what it says on the tin"

Also read somewhere that using silicone mastic in and around all the joints internally is a good idea to prevent red spider mites from hiding in the corners. Is this a proven success?

John

Hi - Sorry can't help on preservative specifics - we bought tannelised wood and painted outside (purely cosmetic!) and left inside untreated, we dust the shavings and corners with red mite powder regularly and so far (6 months on) are rot and mite free.  Good Luck.

Agree with Johnie but if you can find a preservative/stain that's safe for bats (protected species, therefore must say if toxic to them) then you should be safe, afaik.

I would love to have a shiny plastic lined coop with rounded corners (eglu?!) but so far we've been lucky doing no more than johnie states.

Also Munty told me to use the cheap vaseline down the joints and cracks, which I did, and the big henhouse has since been mite free, but then I did creosote the outside and part of the inside on someone's suggestion until Munty told me not to do the inside because of the fumes and being toxic, so we lined the bottom half inside with hardboard and sprayed behind it with poultryshield and waited 2 weeks before putting any chooks in there.  They are now fine, with no probs.  The mites I had recently were in a different shed that hadn't been treated inside at all!!!

Just thinking about "Mite" proofing the coop - Would PVA worked into the corner joints be safe?

I know that PVA is safe once it has dried.

I am thinking of running a small bead along each joint to effectively seal them to prevent hiding places.
