just read this in a site called dr greenfingers - To get a good crop of Potatoes start them into growth now, to do this place them in seed box's with eye's uppermost, this is were shoots develop, ( this is known as chitting ) place the trays in a cool frost free place with plenty of light but not direct Sunlight, four weeks before planting, water the tubers at regular intervals with a diluted mix of seaweed extract.

i know about chitting but the bit about watering them has thrown me, i was planning on putting them on top of a wardrobe but may have to rethink if i have to water them. is it really necessary? :?:

Hate this kind of thing, why do they have to make it sound so complicated?

All I can see from watering 'em would be a higher risk of mould or rotting off.

A lot of gardeners are now questioning why we even bother to chit because in most cases eventual crop size is negligible between the two methods.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

I tried spraying with seaweed solution and can't say I noticed any difference. I do chit the earlies - but I don't think it makes any difference to the main crop results.

Unadulterated C**P :!:
Take your advice from the spud bashers on this site. THEY seem to know what they're doing!

Just puchased my spuds for this year.

They all seemed to do well in my little trial of single tubers last year.
Also got my onions, both red and white.
Got all excited over the plot this afternoon trying to decide what goes where!
30 years ago getting excited involved the female sex not spuds  :D
Must be getting old
Have fun you people.

I plant them as soon as I get them.  I actually have one variety where I keep my own seed (naughty but it simply isn't available anywhere) and I plant this in October or November.  Heck, every one you leave in the ground when you lift them produces a wonderful healthy plant right in the middle of your parsnip patch!
