Pigeon Manure
« on: July 21, 2009, 16:36 »
Hello,
Just been given an allotment. Which I have began clearing and digging to allow the elements to do their stuff in time for next season. On site there are bags of pigeon manure which can be used by all. Would it be beneficial for me to use as I dig? Spread over after digging? Or leave well alone?
The area which I have dug certainly looks like the ground requires some sort of feeding.
Thanks.
Glosterboy.

T.O.B.N.D. scatters it roughly on the top - lets the rain wash it in for a week or so then digs it in about a week before he plants.

I've put some out to do the same but to be honest it was getting a little ripe after a day or so - I just worked it into the top 2 inches with a fork.

Welcome Glosterboy.

We get pigeon manure sometimes too. It is very strong stuff and you sometimes find eggs and bodies in it. I usually tip it onto the compost heap and leave it for a while. It would not be wise to grow anything in it straight away but it would be OK for spring.

Thanks to you both. Looks like I will be using the pigeon manure in part only of the allotment. Just in case there is a bad reaction.

It's brilliant stuff as part of a compost heap. Layer of green stuff, layer of pigeon manure, layer of greens, etc. End with a layer of greens. Cover to keep the smell from offending anyone. Turn periodically.

Good compost.
