*sigh* tomato blight
« on: August 21, 2009, 13:01 »
For the second year in a row I have pulled up over 75% of my toms before the fruit was able to ripen due to blight.

This darn weather though, we're overdue a thunderstorm by about 10 days, and the weather has been hot (over 30C during the day and no lower than 19C at night) and humid (over 80% relatve humidity) for about a week - in other words perfect blight weather.

I don't even know if I should bother with toms next year as it's too much hassle to grow nice plants for them to keel over at the crucial moment  :tongue2:

I was the same as you hun *hugs*

My 2yr old and I were so excited watched the green toms grow and grow, had about 40 toms on 2 plants, easily.

Woke up one morning, stepped out to check my garden, and the toms were brown, stems and leaves blotchy, whole plant keeled over. I was gutted.

Sorry about your tomatoes. I wonder if its worth doing them outside?
Been hot here too, but quite windy, so drier.
Did you spray with Bordeaux mixture?

Not only in France, our whole allotment of 40 plots got the dreaded blyte, I'n not going to grow toms outdoors next year coz apparently our area has had it for the last three years, greenhouse toms only next year for me, I too was gutted having to uproot my 12 money makers and burn them, have hung a few of the green toms in the hope they may ripen but I don't hold out much hope

I'm banned for being obnoxious (not pompous as you might have thought)

How did they get decent tomatoes in the "old days"?  Were they more resistant? Or was it all under glass?
Be interesting to know what %age of outdoor tomatoes get struck down.
