Hi, I've just found some metalwork that would make an ideal arch in the allotment. Each side is 18 inches by 6 foot. Would I be able to grow 2 cucumbers on each side or is there only room for one ? There will be plenty to grip onto.

Good afternoon Ianhhhhjikm!!  Well, it depends on how far apart the mesh (if it is mesh) is. too large and you'll be out there winding the tendrills round the wires each day.

Can you put 1 cucumber on each side of the frame 
  ie     x ][ x    (gap under arch)    x ][ x
That would work, I reckon

I have an angled frame 5' x 4' covered in chicken wire. I grow 6 Marketmore ridge cucumber plants planted 9" apart up the frame. Works fine for me.  I get a crop of beetroot from the 'back side'of my frame, despite it being partly shaded as the cucumbers crawl up the other side.

I would go for 2 plants each side on your frame.  They will benefit from good dollop of compost under each.
