I always grow Moneymaker because it is easy and reliable and a few other varieties of good flavoured cherry tomatoes.  This year it's Black Cherry, Red Cherry and Sungold.
Cheese makes everything better.

Ask 10 gardeners, you'll get 12 answers - you've got 4 already!

My staple is "Shirley", but I'm also branching out this year with Brandywine, Black Russian, Black Cherry, Paul Robeson, Tamina, and Super Roma.

D'you know, I'm not sure that this thread is going to help you!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

For good yield, reliability and flavour I say moneymaker for a beginner.

My new favourite (at least until I grow something different) was Ildi, which actually managed a small crop for me last year - my mother's greenhouse crop did very well.  It's tasty, cherry-plum, bright yellow and prolific.

We all love Tomatoes here Dave  :)

Just like you and your peas.  ;)

Caz will probably have you about 50 flower buckets by the time we get to come down. Maybe Easter weekend.

I was referring to the fact that your faves are all named after large numbers!

Don't need too many buckets Mick, your original offer of 20 will be fine!

That's good to know - I'm doing them this year, along with Suncherry, Super Roma, Black Cherry and Balconi Yellow. Moneymaker and Gardeners Delight are always good. The only toms I've done so far which I didn't like were ribbed things called something like Cuore di Bue - tasteless and VERY mushy. Ended up binning them.

Im still looking for the tomato that tastes like I remember the ones my grandfather grew.

I've tried about 50 varieties over the years all were much better than the supermarket tat (apart from the blight resistant ones - legend and ferline  :tongue2:  :tongue2: ) but still not as I remember them.  There seems to be a move towards sweetness rather than the acidic bite I like  :(

Sungold / sunbaby were very nice cherry toms and roma / super roma made some very nice pasta sauce.

What do want to do with them lightyears?

That's why i'm trying tigerella this year all the catalogues say they are tangy..so fingers xd.
Also trying Black Cherry, Purple Ukraine and a Banana 1,
plus the usual San Marzano and costoluto Fiorentino for freezing and cooking and gardener's delight just for the grandkids :)

We grew tigerella last year. Pretty prolific & quite a sharp citrus taste. Great with strong Irish cheddar. Also grew Golden Sunrise. Bit bland.

This year it's Brandywine, Roma, Shirley & Tigerella for the kids.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Flavour of tomatoes ( or anything ) can be quite subjective, some people prefer sweeter types some go for something sharper, others like the aromatic side.
Choice of variety is not all - flavour also depends on how they are grown.
For me it has to be soil grown, enriched with compost or well rotted manure and definately not overwatered.
Then it has to be fresh picked and certainly not refrigerated ( kills the flavour )

No wonder those supermarket toms taste of nothing at all
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!
