What is a pole in allotment terms? I have seen it mentioned several times in relation to the size of plot. We measured our plot at the weekend and it was 11m x 20m. How many poles is that?

Rods, poles, perches and roods were all rather confused. They could all be a measure of length (5.5 yards). Rods, poles and perches could also be a measure of area (5.5 yards square, or 30.25 square yards). I make yours 8.7 poles. Anyone else for a go :?:

A pole as a unit of measure may be linear or square. Eiter way, it is 5.5 yards in length or 5.5 yd x 5.5yd square.
Your plot would be about 4 poles.
There are 160 poles to the acre.
4 poles length = 1 chain = 1 cricket pitch

Is it an English measurement and that's why I don't know it? Or is it a secret allotment measurement and I haven't been properly initiated in to the brotherhood?

Are you not English Marmeduke? Just curious.
Rod pole and perch were (are) all the same: six inches! Now that's english for you.
Take a look at this site for an interesting read:

or this one if you really want to be confused! Google again - amazing what's 'out there'!

I will have lived in England seven years at the end of the month. I haven't completely converted to Englishness yet but I am slowly getting there.

What a pity.

Presume you are a Scot Mellowmick! This can be taken two ways, but perhaps I won't go there as I am a foreign cat! Clue: grandfather was from across the border :)

Just punning with Marmaduke. I'm actually the 5th generation to have lived in Dundee but was born in Norfolk!

I have told my husband that I might love him more if he had a scottish accent.
