Monsoon rain and my poor hens
« on: November 30, 2007, 09:20 »
We had monsoon rain (I was safely back visiting in the UK, very cold but dry!) 120 ltrs per sq mtr fell in 24 hours.  Poor hens got their hen house flooded with water and mud, hubby got at least 12 wheelbarrows of mud out of the ´sleeping´bit  hennies were safely up on the roost.  The day run is at least 3 inches higher now (ground that is) and we are working at removing the soil from that gradually, if we don´t we are in danger of becoming stooped through having to bend over getting in and out due to the shade cover!!  At least we did not lose any hens and they didn´t even stop laying, what good gilrs they are :D

" ... mainly on the plain" doesn't apply in this case then

120 ltrs per sq mtr - I think that translates to 12cm?  If so, 4.72 inches of rain in 24 hours is certainly going to do some damage.

13 days later and th end of the  garden is still very muddy. Poor hubby was frightened, said he thought we would lose the whole house
No rain since though.  Siver lining is we got loads of ´extra´ soil from neighbours patio to fill our raised bed :D  There were over 20 barrows full dumped by the storm on a tiny patio aprox 3x2 mtrs.  At least it was decent top soil :D  Will plant my garlic in the raised bed :D

Jim said it was frightening.  At least the ditch at the front of the house is now level and flows nicely (didn´t find out until we had lived here a few months our house water ran into it    We wondered where the water came from :?
