Hello,
One of our hens has been broody for weeks, i've tried cooling her in water and am keeping her shut out of the nesting boxes during the day, but am unable to isolate her as i have no cage or materials / money to make one. Is there anything else i can do to discourage her? Also, when i shut her out of the nesting boxes she is fine for a few hours but then flies out over the run (which is 6 feet high) - should she be able to fly that high? I have clipped a wing but wonder if i've done it enough? The other hens are all laying well and not trying to escape the run!

Hi Tosca, as far as the wing clipping goes, I was amazed at how agile my girls could be - even with a clipped wing - and had to fully enclose my run with a wire 'roof'.
I can't be much help with your broody, I'm afraid as I am a newcomer myself. But why not get a dozen fertilised eggs and let her sit? More lovely chooks! :lol:

we have a Sussex and a Sussex Silkie cross that have been going broody all year. At first we tried to break them, dunking in cold water etc. That never really worked, so now I have been leaving them to it. After about 4 weeks they snap out of it, unfortunately some breeds will also be prone to bouts of broodiness.
Just make sure that you lift them out of the coop for some food and water every day

check out your local freecycle/freegle sites - often they have dog cages/pens on there for free :D

I have got a black rock and a cucoo maran and both are broody its driving me mad. Out of 12 chickens i am getting 1 egg a day. 2 broody, 4 to old, 5 to young and one thats laying.
