Pototoes grown in pots
« on: October 10, 2012, 18:25 »
I have grown some Desiree and King Edward potatoes in pots this year and I have not harvester them all yet.  Can anyone advise how long they will store in the pots if they are not disturbed.

Or should I harvest them all now and keep in a bag in the shed

The longer you leave them in the tubs, the more chance they have of catching blight and the spores working their way down into the tubers ruining your hard won spuds.  I should dig them up, leave them in the sun for an hour or two (to harden the skins) then store in light blocking paper bags.

Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Do they still have foliage on?  If not, the chances of them getting blight now are low, I would think.

The risk from now onwards is that of frost.  Can you protect them from frost?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

thank you for that.  They do not have foliage on but it may be difficult to keep them from frost. I think i will look at one of the pots at the weekend and see what state they are in

They may rot if left in compost. Dry, bag and keep in frost free place.

If they are outside they are at serious risk of slug damage as well as the frost and rotting in wet compost. Lift em, dry em and store em.
