I started them off in the greenhouse in april and then planted out in late may
but the tallest is only about 4 ft 6 and some only 2ft tall.
They have cobs on them but i dont know if they will get very big,

Hi Carl! Welcome to this site. I think it's been a variable year for sweetcorn. I've just harvested some cobs of "Lark" f1 which have been quite big even though the plants were about the same size as your tallest. Grown some "Blue Hopi" which have grown over six foot and a couple of "Giant Mexicans" have reached about eight foot. Some nice cobs forming on those but a few of my friends have had a poor show this year from their sweetcorn.
Cheers!
Mike

I have mixed results with my 'Prelude' sweetcorn - some of the cobs are only 1/2 the size they should be whereas last year there was none of this.  Is it the weather????? Sunshine is required.

when only half the kernals on the cobs swell it is usually because of poor pollination. If it is very windy or wet when the tassels are dropping their pollen then proper pollination is unlikely.

Often the top cob is pollinated ok but any further down the plant will not be.
I always think that if there is more than 1 full cob..then it's a bonus :)

I've grown Incredible this year and the plants are very tall indeed. They look promising but I've not harvested them yet as the weather here has been awful. I shall get to them today to check if any are ready. There looked to be some promising cobs on there last time I checked

I'll let you know.  You can press your nail into the flesh of a biggish cob and if the juice is cloudy they're ready, if it's clear you have to leave them a bit longer.  Usually just looking at the cob you can see whether it's ripe as it's very yellow  :D
