Storing capabilities of second earlies
« on: February 25, 2012, 13:42 »
Has anyone tried to store second early potatoes, Kestrel for instance?

Also whats the latest you could sow a second early to get a late crop?

Thanks
Andy

I was using Ambo up until just before Christmas when I ran out, with no sign of them deteriorating :)

I've stored second earlies until Jan when they ran out. The smaller marble sized ones were looking a little rubbery by then, while the large ones were perfect, so would advise to use the small ones first. (Have done this with Maris Peer, Ulster Sovereign and Gladstone- all kept ok)
Actually I've even kept some first earlies that i had allowed to grow large until then (Red duke of york) and they were absolutely fine

The latest i've sown them was June, the year i got my plot- sowed first, second and main and got a very decent crop from all of them by September - which surprised me as i wasn't expecting much from the Maincrop ones.

I've still got some Kestrel and they haven't even started chitting yet.

I grow Ambo as an early maincrop.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have got some axona which have not chitted yet. The Charlotte have chitted, but we dug them up earlier than the axona.

If you leave potatoes to mature before you lift them most varieties, including earlies, will keep.

Earlies lifted before they are mature, which is when they should be lifted and eaten, will not keep. Same goes for seconds and mains.
