ph meters
« on: January 26, 2010, 23:33 »
Recently I've seen a couple of posts about chicken poo ph but I don't think anyone has confirmed yet that it's ph neutral. I have free-ranging chooks.
Having just got my nut trees I'm panicking about my soil. Nuts like it fairly alkaline and I've always thought my soil was more acid as I've got large trees (including fir) and camelias and rhododendron flourish under the trees. It's definitely a dark loam.
Anyway, I need a ph meter to go round the garden and raised beds to find out .....(yes you guessed!).....what ph each area is.
There are loads for sale and the range of prices is huge.
Please can anyone advise me on what type is most reliable but easy to use? Will I have to use test tubes or is there a probe you can stick in the bed?
Be very grateful for any input.........
(So would the trees that are waiting bare-rooted in my porch.....!)

tube kits are LOTS more accurate than any meter for the same kind of money... there are old threads on this too
