Im hoping to grow some veg in buckets about12" long and 20" deep does anyone know what will be suitable to grow so i can get some seeds this weekend thanks

Carrots like Amsterdam forcing(baby carrot)or parmex or I think "atlas" is another round rooted type.

Letuce like little gem, mixed salad leaves and compact types of courgettes (just bought "soliel", yellow type) for container growing.

I hope others can advise better, as I am too looking for advice on parsnips.

Forgot to mention I grew spring onions (white lisbon) and raddish (cherry belle+french breakfast) in containers last year.  Lots of types available.

You can grow anything in containers if they're big enough. Last year I had about 45 various sizes and grew everything from spring onions to cabbage and potatoes. In all, fourteen different types of veg, not including the usual greenhouse crops. Having scrounged a load more I have nearly 100 for this year including flower tubs, fish boxes, a baby bath, plastic wheelbarrow and more. The great thing with container growing is you can start them off under cover to get an early start (if you have a greenhouse) and put them out when the weather improves. You can also make sure the growing medium is just right for the individual crop ...not always easy on the plot. I keep my main veg area for staple crops that we use a lot of. Everything else goes in tubs.

swiss chard is a good one as you can cut it and it will produce again and again , and i did some beetroot and little gems ,carrots leeks and dont forget potatoes

Swiss chard - Bright Lights
Carrots - Amsterdam forcing & Paris Market Atlas
Beetroot - Perfection 3
Lettuce - Paris island cos
Radichhio - Forget variety
Sprouts - Red Bull, maybe 2-3 plants
Tomatoes - Tumbler, Balconi, Tiny Tim, Gartenperle, Maskokta ?
Chillis - 10-16 varieties
Spring onion - white Lisbon
Raddish - Cherry Belle & French Breakfast
Courgette - Solile F1 & another bush type
Cucumber - Marketmore, Spacemaster & a French Gherkin (Mr F's)

Maybes are,

Tomato - Black Krim, Black Truffle, Pineapple, Sub Arctic Plenty, San Marzano, also several more types

Celleriac - Giant Prague X1
Cabbage - Red Drumhead x 1
Cauliflower - Red swiss ? x1
Kale - dwarf type
Turnip - Dwarf type
Parsnip - Dwarf Type
spinach
Rocket


I don't know that I have the room or all the varieties are suitable, but it's worth a go as I have the seeds. (The one's which say x1 mainly)

I am growing some bits like cabbage,sprouts to practice sowing and giving them to my sister who has an allotment, she can then pass them on if need be.

Should be able to grow plenty in containers that size.

Last year I grew the following in containers about the same size:

Carrots (Autumn King, Red Samurai)
Parsnips (Gladiator F1)
Chard
Shallots
Beetroot (Alto F1, Chioggia Pink)
Courgette (1 plant per container)
Cucumber (Burpless Tasty Green - 1 plant per container)
Radish
Spring Onions
Brussel Sprout
Runner beans
Broad Beans
I even have Purple Sprouting Broccoli in them (and it is just starting to show some heads now - yum!)
