Buying a polytunnel help
« on: March 24, 2012, 12:13 »
Hello, I'm after buying a polytunnel right away and would like a decent one and have managed to save up for a good one.  The floor space is approximately 4 x 8 metres.  The problem is I don't know where to get one from.  The internet has lots of polytunnels that I could buy but I don't know how good they are, or if they come with the special really strong plastic etc.  I don't want to spend my money and find I have rubbish plastic that's not the proper stuff, that then needs replacing in a couple of years time.  Also some of them look like glorified gazebos, which obviously I don't want.  Can anyone help or advise me?  Thank you very much in advance.

We built ours out of builders waste.  Scaffold bar, water pipe etc, and ended up with ours 20'x 8' feet.

The only thing I bought was the cover (not the proper ploy cover though), and a box of long coach bolts and nuts.

Is there any way you could do the same? (skip diving, DIY etc?)

all the major polytunnel suppliers should have 5 year guarantees on their covers, but their tunnels are not cheap - as much as a greenhouse some are more expensive

Don't buy from e-bay because I did and the cover didn't even last 2 years - neither did the frame come to that ::)
The Guardman polytunnels appear to be made of the same white or green mesh with little clear poly windows in between, these are the covers to avoid IMO.

Our allotment society have recently had one installed for community use and used First tunnel's. Just a quick google will find them. They did an excellent job and are highly recommended. I have no affiliation with them at all I just like to give credit for a good job well done.

Thanks so far, by the way I am looking to spend up to £500 if I could get a decent one for the size I want for this amount.  Cheers.

Something to consider - our allotment rules have a 'maximum' size for polytunnels (and all other constructions), so might be worth a check before you spend £500 on one!
