water butt linking kit connectors
« on: January 04, 2012, 20:56 »
anyone know if you can just buy the connectors from a water butt linking kit?

i have more than one butt but need a longish piece of pipe so wanted to buy just the connectors and get the pipe off the roll from an aquatic shop.

Check out plumbing suppliers like Wickes and B&Q for starters.

I ma sure these shoud be readily available, just not marketed as water butt connector 'sockets'

Try your little local hardware shop, those seem to have everything in the name of the lord here. :)

Plastic tank connectors ! match them up to your hose, you should be able to purchase them from your aquatics shop ( more of a marine aquarium thing ) but you should be able to source them cheaper from a plumbers merchants, and a couple of jubilee clips just to be on the safe side  ;)

All you really need is a length of garden hose, long enough to reach the bottom of both barrels to form a siphon. No drilling of holes or connectors required. The water level in the barrels will always end up the same.

Construction of a siphon. For those of you that did not pay attention in your science lessons at school, here is how to make water apparently flow uphill!! Place the two barrels, that are to be joined by a siphon, side by side on secure foundations. Fill one of the barrels. Take a length of plastic hose pipe, long enough to reach to the bottom of both barrels over their rims, and then completely immerse the pipe in the full barrel, allowing all the air to escape. Place your palm firmly over one end of the hose, while still under the water surface, and quickly pull the end of the pipe into the second barrel to below the water level in the full tank. Now take away your palm and the water will flow uphill, over the barrel rims, and eventually, the water levels in both barrels will equalize.

No, you do not need to suck the water if you follow the procedure as above. I have used this system for years with no problems to collect rainwater from a greenhouse roof. I use a further siphon to take the water from one of the barrels into the greenhouse and distribute it using a micro tube to adjustable drippers beside each of my tomato plants.
