anyone suggest their ``best variety shallot``?
« on: October 04, 2012, 13:51 »
I`m looking for the type of shallot that people think is a good allrounder.I intend to grow from seed next year,so I thought, before I rush out and waste my money on the wrong packet,I would ask you all for your favourite variety please ?

I haven`t a clue what sort I grew this year, they were given to me by a friend. They have a red skin, some of them went to seed, but we did have some rather inclement weather !!

I have read that they won`t or shouldn`t go to seed if I grow from seed.

thankyou in advance  :)

i have grew both seed and sets over the years i think sets have proven the better choice over seed but it depends on the ground and the preparation that as has been mentioned on this site by  onion growers it mite be an idea to set both seed and sets to See how they both compare

i usually buy whats available at my local nursery i can't remember what i bought this year but they rotted in the ground anyway thanks to the wet weather

looking through Marshall's catalogue they have quite a selection of shallots well worth a look good luck with your choice

I like a long shallot and tend to grow the Jermor, Vigarmor,Lonor and Mikor, and I think there's even a Passandor

I do like the Golden Gourmet one as well, but that's a round one
I have grown the eschallote gris but wasn't impressed

Growing from "set", Red Sun and Golden Gourmet seem to be good basic shallot varieties which store very well (eg almost 12 months from lifting!)  I've dabbled with the long "French" type shallots and to be honest, not been that impressed - they seem exceptionally fussy about their growing conditions, weather (don't like it wet, don't like it dry, not too warm, not too cold  :nowink:) and worse, they don't store too well either ....

To be fair, I haven't tried any other round type variety so I can't comment on what is best.

I vote for Longor too.  I got it as sets from Garden Organic this year, but it 's not in next year's catalogue. I have pre-ordered it from Tuckers Seeds instead.

I got a fantastic crop from it in a lousy year.  They weren't fussy, i just planted them and left them to it.

I tried Jermor the year before, and that didn't do nearly so well in better weather.  Although they weren't so productive, I had no storage problems whatsoever.

It seems that I didn't look at my Garden Organic catalogue closely enough.  They are stocking Longor this year too.
