Water butt for comfrey/nettle tea
« on: December 18, 2012, 10:16 »
Ive been wondering if I can use a water butt for making comfrey/nettle tea and if so what size it should be?
I've got a 100L water butt with a tap at the lottie but do I need a bigger one? I've read that you need to soak the leaves and then dilute the resulting liquid so could I 'steep' the leaves in a laundry bag in the butt and then remove them and dilute the liquid and then apply it without further dilution?

I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

That is exactly my way. I stuff the leaves into onion storage bags, cover with water and at the end of autumn dump the residue in the compost bin. I don't dilute unless the liquid is very dark, it usually comes out about the colour of weak tea. I had a much bigger harvest of leaves this year and when it looked more like black coffee I diluted half and half.

Mine is 125Lt. I have 5 comfrey plants and had 5 cuts this year. Roughly half into the water butt and the rest used as mulch or straight into the compost bin. Just gives me enough for the season.
