Seed Potaotes
« on: March 11, 2012, 15:19 »
Hi All,
I id ask this question in another thread but it seems to got lost in the mire.

Some of my seed potatoes are quite small, whilst others are large. Does the size of the seed spud in any way indicate the likely size of the spuds & yield I am likely to get?

From my personal experience, no. I find I'm just paying a lot more per pound for something that will yield me only what smaller potatoes will yield. Frankly, I'm amazed at how well some of the tiniest potatoes you can imagine will yield. No idea why larger potatoes don't do relatively the same, but they won't.

You can cut larger potatoes so that each half/third/quarter each has an 'eye', but you must then let the cut side dry a day or so and then dust it with some lime to prevent rotting before planting. Frankly, I'm too lazy to bother with all this stuff. I'll take the time to dig through the seed potato bushel at the shop and pick out only smaller ones which can go straight into the hole. The key here is that the soil needs to be well manured to yield a good crop.

I always pick the ones about the size of a small hens egg. You get more for your money and they fit nicely into egg boxes for chitting!

Not all DD.

I went to a Potato weekend at a Nursery in January. The Nursery was about a 50 mile round trip so it did cost me in petrol, but I underestimated and didn't get enough >:( So I used T & M on two occasions to top up my Spuds. On both occasions I got free P&P and only paid £2.99 for a 2.5 Kg bag which I think is very good value considering they were delivered to my door.

Next year (I know I know) I may well get my full order from T & M using their free P & P offer, looking at their website they have about 100 varieties of 1st, 2nd & maincrop to choose from.
