Poisonous Plants
« on: January 21, 2011, 21:16 »
Probably a stupid question - but the stupid question's my specialist subject.

Are there any plants which will either kill chickens or give them a jippy tummy?

I'm redoing the garden. Again. At the moment it's a woodland vibe, but this may change. My normal look is a post apocalyptic nightmare cum football pitch. I'd like to have the girls running around as part of their free range lifestyle. (And that they can really shift.)

Can any of you good people out there please give me some advice?

Thank you.

take a look here at our useful poultry information section:-

http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?board=13.0

and through that you will find 2 sections about toxic plants one of which is this:-

Thanks for that.

I'm not sure about the inclusion of the rhubarb - my girls totally nuked the rhubarb last year and thrived on it. However, it's going to be transplanted - if only because I want my crumble!

i hope you don't mind, but I'm cutting and pasting onto a seperate document to stick in the shed.

Once again, thank you.

I know where you're coming from - I think all creatures, including us, have the ability to avoid 'bad' things. however, like us hens are little piggies and try everything. We all enjoy our little indulgences and sometimes things which are not good for us eg booze make us feel good while hurting us. My girls like things such as mealworms and corn taste nice to them, but don't necessarily do them any good.

But thanks anyway! I appreciate all input!

Rhubarb is poisonous to chooks although a lot of people report their chooks eat it. Just because they do not roll over clutching their tummies does not mean it is not harming them :)
