pea Douce provence
« on: February 02, 2014, 21:35 »
In the autumn I put some pea Douce Provence into the greenhouse to eat as shoots.  I never got around to eating them and they are about twelve inches tall and growing well.  I am unsure what to do with them because early.  Are they hardy enough to go out in March.  I could plant them into the black flower buckets and keep in the greenhouse.  Do they need to be pollinated.

That's probably the best thing to do with them  ;) They self pollinate.

Douce Provence are very hardy. I sowed some outdoors in autumn a couple of years back. Our daytime temps are pretty warm by UK standards but our night temperatures are quite low every night - our minimum that year was minus 11 ºC - and they survived. They don't grow very tall - 40 cm or so, if I remember rightly - but they were surprisingly productive and a very welcome harvest at that time of year. No idea why I haven't grown them since! Thanks for reminding me about them. Will sow them again this autumn.
