As a Newbe I'm on the lookout for free materials for my plot.

A friend of mine is always jumping in skips to feed his wood burner at home,  I'm more likely to need pallets and sheeting etc... 

Without donning my stripey clothes and swag bag  is there any way to get hold of cool stuff for the plot?

Websites like freecycle and preloved are always good, and even sometimes in the local paper adverts and around here, people even put stuff outside with a note saying FTGH!

Small shops are please to get ride of pallets cardboard ect

If its wood you are after you will often find that window installers are only too glad to get rid of stuff.  Old frames make good cold frames.

Indeed, just to confirm that if you don't ask permission first then it's theft.

I'll confirm that. Two friends and  I were arrested one cold night at 3am for taking firewood from a builders' skip ... we were rather "bouyant" I hasten to add. Pinned up against the wall by three police cars, spent the night in the cells. Needless to say, they weren't interested in taking the incident to court... still feel they might have had better things to do with their manpower.

I knock on doors before going in skips unless the house is empty.

Ahh nothing beats a good skip dive, kindling, wire for a leaf compost square, some gardening magazines,  and best of all a lovely tin which i polished up and made into a box to hold fishing flies. I then tied some of the best looking flies i have ever made, and gave them to my Dad as a Chrismas present.
One rather interesting find by a friend of mine was a box full of magazines which were absolutely perefect for an all male student household.....

Well a bit of success this weekend. A nice growing trough for my tomatoes, plus some nice pieces of wood to make supports for said growing trough. Some wood offcuts for kindling!
