Title: Slow tomatoes this year
Post by: AngelaP on July 19, 2022, 16:38
Hello!   Have other growers of greenhouse tomatoes experienced very slow growing plants and here we are in mid July not many ripened tomatoes on my cordon plants.  The bush variety are finally getting going but this is the first in 15 years I have not had ripe tomatoes by the beginning of July.

Same here too; and Welcome Angela!

I reckon it's because we had such a quick start to the season, that the plants are really not up to growing so quickly in the warmth, and struggling to keep up, especially now!

We've had just one GH tom (today), and the rest are still green in there, while the outside plants are raring to go and we've had a pound or so already, and they're 'Shirley', which normally take much longer!

But peppers have just raced away, and normally I'm hopeless at getting any at all!

Odd year, but they'll be fine when it all evens out soon...

...one hopes...:0~

I'm growing Moneymaker in the greenhouse and just checked. There are 9 ripe ones, mainly on two plants. The other 10 cordons are still a few days away

our tomatoes, a mix of varieties, are still growing and ripening in our greenhouse.  After planing early in the year we do not water at all, they still grow and fruit but put their roots down further for the water in the soil.
perhaps it is something others might want to try next year, save water. :D :D

Just checked my diary for last year.
First Sungold were picked on July 13th & after that, it went mad, with 5 Sungold & 5 Shirley averaging more than 4kg a week between them through to late September.
Last Sungold were September 19th & last Shirley November 17th.

Yes, my toms aren't ripening either. Too cold and dull.

My tomatoes are growing (reluctantly) and quite a distance between trusses.  Nothing like the pictures on the seed packets!

Cheers,  Tony.
