Missing chicken
« on: June 13, 2011, 16:37 »
Just been out to check for eggs and my eldest sons chook, Eggbert, isn’t anywhere to be seen!

They have a very large run, but I do let them out once a day into the garden when I am around.

Eggy has been being a bit strange the last few days, she’s normally the first out into the garden and today and yesterday she was the last, kind of hanging back.

Don’t really know what to do, have been a walk around the block, but the back of our garden backs onto to miles of old mining land so can’t really go looking anymore and the front is a main road.

Hopefully she will come home at bedtime.

Try shaking a container with treats in while you walk round the garden.  If you use a container Eggy recognises you might be in luck.

Tried that.  Been out with the corn cup, knocking my ring on it, which they know means treats!

Is she old enough to be broody?  Could she have been laying eggs somewhere hidden?  If so she will be sitting on her eggs and will be really difficult to find.

Panic over, no idea where she went, but my son came home and went out to look for her and after about 15 mins of bush searching she came running into the garden!

Perhaps one of these days, someone will invent a minute GPS collar for chooks so we know where they wander to!

She has only sarted laying recently, is she old enough to be broody?  I think she is about 30 weeks old and she is an orpington (if thats of any importance!)

There are many about but at £150 per transmitter it would be expensive. :D
