We were discussing using perlite when sowing seeds, something I have never done. What is the advantages and what is the mixture of compost to perlite.

I put in enough so it is evenly distributed.
I think it helps to stop seeds rotting as the compost is more free draining.

I use a third of perlite, a third coir and a third of multipurpose compost, sieved. Coir helps with water retention and the perlite keeps the mix nice and open so air can get to the developing roots

(Not much in the way of nutrients in this mix so need to feed young plants with very dilute liquid food as soon as thye get their first set of true leaves)
