What sort of squash?
« on: November 18, 2007, 18:48 »
We grew a few "Jackolantern" pumkins for the kids to use at halloween, the ones that were not ripe "in time" have slowly been eaten.
We found them a bit bland, ok for pumkin pie :)
Can anyone recommend a smallish squash with a bit of flavour for next year ?(just for eating)
The kids can grow a few jackolanterns just for halloween

Pumpkin is one of those veggies, that are only suitable for consumption on biological ripeness, otherwise they are all disgusting, you might as well be looking for a variety that needs the shortest growing season, on our climate. Simply Vegetables is one company that tells you that info.

I'm doing Avalon Butternut Squash next year, but Aggy's Pumpkin soup recipe has got me tempted too.

Can anyone name a tasty pumpkin - I'm going for taste not size here.

(Another thing to get the neighbours interested - pumpkins ain't grown round these parts)

The best tasting pumpkins I have had are Calabaza de Guernica. I bought the seeds in Menorca. They grow well here(Derbyshire). The main reason I tried them was on the packet it says "muy apreciada culinariamente" they certainly are.

We had an "onion squash" the other week on the veg box.  Very tasty.  Don;t know how easy it is to grow, and is only the size of an onion, but nice none the less.
On the very steep learning curve of organic veg growing!!!!
