When "cool" isn't.
« on: February 19, 2021, 14:28 »
Recently I've noticed a very irritating trend by some tv presenters on certain programmes using the word "cool" in nearly every sentence. I'm talking particularly about "Money For Nothing" where items intended for the skip are taken away, refurbished and sold at a profit. The two can hardly breathe without gushing about how cool this or that looks and it really gets my goat. Don't know why but it does. Perhaps the word suited those times in the 60's or 70's but nowadays it is rather passé to say the least. Anyone else feel the same?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I don't particularly like it, but It's certainly not passe - my teenage grandchildren use it quite a bit.

It's taken over from 'fab', but used by youngers nowadays...

How about 'Yaaaah', instead of 'yes' then?

'Ok Yaaah, down the wine bar'...

Yaah is used all the time by our 7 year old grandson and annoys me no end! Especially as it is usually intermittent with gobbledygook.

"Know wha' I mean', is a standard fill-in as well, mainly to fill the void between a slow voice connection to a brain...

To which the answer is "Nope no idea what you are talking about" - has some comical results. Usually cures gobbledegook mind

No doubt those complaining also had their own youth phrases decades ago that their parents and grandparents couldn't get their heads around. Sometimes people in their in-groups have their own ways of communicating, just standard tibalism and in-group behaviour. I see no logical reason to have a go at them for it.

Al78 you're pretty good at stopping people posting to what was a light hearted conversation by your own prejudice against "old people". You're not that young yourself (? mid 40's), you'll be there soon. I doubt that you have much to do with real "young" people like my grandson.

There's a lot of pseudo-patois in chat these days, mainly down to awful broadcasting, so it'll just work with some kids but not all thank goodness!

A few years ago, some kids decided that they could speak with a rise in their final syllable, like a 'cod' Australian accent - which I know well, and like as my old flatmates were all from Sydney, and it has become a standard irritant here too! You'd hope the BBC wouldn't do it, but of course, they need the kids don't they!

A delightful description was relayed to me once, calling this the 'Moronic interrogative', which seems to sum it all up!
