Title: Benefits of planting onion sets now
Post by: Earthy on September 20, 2009, 11:08
Are there any benefits of planting onion sets now? or is it just as well to condition the soil and plant them in the spring?

Thanks

Earthy

If they are overwintering onions then they should go in soon. I will wait a few weeks myself.

If "normal" spring planting onions then they will probably bolt next year as they could well count this late growth as the first year and do what nature intended and set seed in the second year - next year. So no onions.

So it depends on the type of onion that you intend to plant.

One reason ive planted over winter onions is because i heard Monty on some radio program a few weeks ago saying ,

Get down to your garden centre and buy some winter onions sets get em in and u will have some onions beginning of next yr when onions are expensive in the shops.

So i went and bought some and they are in.

If im wrong just email Monty lol.

I like to overwinter my onions, it is one less job to do in Spring when there's loads to do.

I'm not sure if you get onions much earlier, i certainly wouldn't be planning to use the space for another summer crop.

I like to see another full bed during the winter too.

I had a bumber crop of white Radar, and red Electric this year, and managed a 'best vegetable exhibit' for a plate of five Radars in a local show.
