Last year I brought a electric tiller, very basic, just plug in to mains switch on and it digs my garden flower beds.
Now I used to have a allotment but had to give it up with bad health but I am slowly on the mend and maybe I could manage to share a small plot with my brother in law that retires in one year, do you think I could run the electric tiller on a portable generator?

Don't see why not as long as the maximum wattage of the tiller is less than the rated output of the generator (and the same voltage and phase), although using a petrol powered generator to power an electric tiller might provoke a little head-scratching by fellow allotmenteers! ;)
Whether your electric tiller has enough power for the sort of work you want it to do is another question, but I'm sure you know its capabilities by now.

I managed an electric strimmer on an old car battery and a 3kW inverter, so anything is possible, your generator would need to be rated about 3x the running current of the tiller to allow for the power surge as you start it, or the generator will trip out.

If you own a generator then fine but if you have to buy one it would be cheaper to buy a petrol tiller.
