Chicken Pellets
« on: March 22, 2010, 07:13 »
My husband came home with a huge bag of chicken pellets that someone offered him at work, quite cheap, I am wondering if the pellets can be used on all crops, or only on certain crops  that benifit from high nitrogen
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I use as a general fertilzer, putting a top dressing on the soil about now - so a few weeks before planting.

Pelleted chicken manure has an average analysis of 4-2.5-2.5 (NPK). Growmore, by comparison is 7-7-7, so clearly PCM is higher in nitrogen than a truly "balanced" fertiliser.

That's pretty good for most vegetables even though some might argue the nitrogen is a bit high for some root crops, but it's a widely used (and sustainable) general fertiliser and I wouldn't get hung-up too much about the chemistry. It's good stuff!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

... if you have foxes in the area, they have a habit of investigating & digging the bed where you put the manure - probably looking for the buried chickens   Other than that, I found chicken manure to be a very good source of nitrogen for plants  :)

As it's slow releasing..it's great for pots and squashes to get them going and fuel the early leaf growth.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Have got my own chickens now, so no shortage of fertilizer. ::)  But used to use chicken pellets all over the garden, just as a general feed.  Only problem I had was that the dogs were very partial to it . . . as they are to most poo!
