Daft question re mulching and bulbs
« on: November 05, 2013, 14:36 »
After letting my garden completely get the better of me this year, I have hired a gardener to do all of the major tidying up for me while I can concentrate on the pretty things.

I really want to mulch my borders with a thick layer of white wood chip, however will spring bulbs be able to cope, or will they remain "stuck"?

I've treated myself to a lovely selection of tulips (and for the first time I've found some black ones!) and would be a bit miffed at myslef that attempts at weed suppression, suppressed bulb growth too!

Thanks :)

Bulbs will push up their noses until they get to the light, so mulch away Casey  :D

The woodchip will not stay white for too long and blend in well

When you say white wood chips, does that mean that they are not rotted down wood shavings? If so there will be a loss of nitrogen in the soil as it then rots but I don't know if that would affect the bulbs, probably not in the first year as they have food stores in the bulb, but it would most probably affect them for the following year, although tulips can need replacing regularly any way
