You are right in my mind, I will start mine this weekend but keep in polytunnel until late May before planting out. That's in north Lincolnshire. I will do same with dwarf beans and then a few days later courgettes, pumpkins, marrows, squash etc

You planted some on the 10th last year
http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=92190.msg1025406#msg1025406

Did they live or did frost get them?

I'm not starting mine for a couple of weeks yet, as they usually can't be planted out before mid-May, here.

Sowed my beans (runner, climbing French, Pea Bean) on 30th April last year. Frost was forecast in Dorset that same night!

Kept in kitchen to germinate, then into cold conservatory.

Started mine off in those small fibre pots in greenhouse this afternoon. Will plant them out in about a month if no frost forecast at that time

Going to wait awhile , although I did put a wigwam up today.  I am away in early May, so intend to sow when I am back to plant out first week in June.  It's not too late round here.

I sowed some climbing French Beans (Blue Lake) a few days ago in pots in the greenhouse.

If they germinate they will give me an early start - I will plant them out in May and protect with plastic sheeting either side of the frame and fleece over the top if frost threatens. 6 small pots worth is a start. I have done this many times before having seen my dad do the same with plastic sheeting (It keeps the cold winds off too).

I will sow another batch in a few days - cobra and more blue lake as well as a few runners.

I think the biggest risk is sowing when it's too cold and loosing the seeds when they rot in the compost.... easy on the watering.
