Hi could any one recommend a link or something to explain the wing clipping.  I have a 3 year old hen who had her wings clipped for me when I brought her at 16 weeks old.  She has been fine upto now and is now getting a bit flighty so dont want her disappearing. 

I also have some 9 week old chicks that I will need to do at some stage, what age do you clip their wings for the first time?

Weell here is a link that Joyfull put on here recently to a diagram.  Clipping right to the end like this can look a bit untidy, so some people leave 2 of the longest feathers, so that when the hen is standing still, she looks as if all her wing feathers are still in place.

Just clip one wing to put them off balance.  Then if it needs doing again say after they've moulted, clip the opposite wing.

We don't clip ours unless its really necessary, so I can't really say what age to start, when they start to fly I suppose.  But I think its necessary for them to be able to fly away from a predator, so I've never clipped any wings until after they've started laying.
