Effective worming technique?
« on: January 03, 2010, 11:46 »
That time again, the chooks need worming. Can anyone offer any advice on how to get the flubenvet to stick to my layer pellets? the pack says 6 grams(one spoon) to 2KG, do you make up the 2KG and give it to them as normal feed then but with the powerd added?

bit confusing, hopefully someone will sort me out

Some people add a little oil to the pellets to help it stick. You dose for 7 days so treat as much as they usually eat in 7 days using the 2kilo=1 teaspoon ratio. Doesn't really matter if some girls eat more than others as they're likely to be fatter and will need more wormer.
I've only got 3 hens and know that their bowl of mash (!/2 kilo pellets) lasts 3 days or so. I just add 1/4 teaspon to each bowl and dose for 9 days. It's so much easier to mix in and I know they'll eat it.

another method for worming,
but this only works with a few chucks,
as per aunt sally,
is a pinch of flubenvet onto a grape that has been cut up, one per bird per day for 7 days.

Last time, I made up a mash of layers pellets, hot water and double strength flub (ie 6gms to 1kg mash - you could crush pellets in a food processor) ... the hens eat a good helping in the morning, and there's enough left for them to come back to during the day. The double strength flub means it doesn't matter if they eat from their normal feeders or free range during the day ... they still get a good helping of the medicine.

1kg was just right for six hens for seven days.
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...

Be careful which strength of Flubenvet you are using as they are different concentrations.

Is it the small flock pack?  I haven't bought one yet 'cos I've still got loads of the commercial strength one left (that's the pinch per grape dose).
