How to remove moss from brickwork?
« on: January 09, 2013, 07:25 »
Last year (autumn time) I gave all the brickwork in the garden a good clean with a wire brush and thought that it would not reappear. How wrong was I? Its come back worse than before and this might be due to the wet weather?
Anyone got any tried and tested method of getting rid of moss on brickwork permanently?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

I've moved this from the chatting board which autoprunes, as any replies with answers to the problem will be useful in the future.

If it's like our driveway, you need to use a proprietary   moss killer - there's load on the market - then give it a good scrub.

Scrubbing alone will only push the moss spores deeper into the brick work.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh so all my hard work last year made it worse.  :(
Never mind, Ive learnt something new and thanks for that DD.
As you mention your driveway, the moss is growing in clumps amongst the gravel in our drive (and is spreading) so if I find a moss killer than can be sprayed / watered from a watering can that would work in the same way and kill the moss?

That's what I did.

I used some lawn weed & feed that contained a moss killer, as I'd got some kicking round, but you can get some specifically for that.

Ive googled moss killers and, as I dont have any lawn weed and feed handy, will visit my local large DIY superstore and purchase some. Job for today in the bag me thinks.  :)

So have got a lovely lawn where your drive was

We have the same problem on our decking round the side of the house, it gets very little sun so it ends up covered in a slippery green coating with lots of moss filling the grooves in the deck boards.
I have scrubbed it in the past with Jeyes fluid but it comes back every year, i think i'll give moss killer a go too this year  :)

Make sure you read the instructions.

I've just been reading one that says not to use below 8C. No doubt it's like glyphosate and will be more effective at a warmer temperature and when it's actively growing.

It looks very 'fresh' now so doesnt that mean it is actively growing? It isnt all dark and dried up.

The temperature is more for the product itself, at a degree which it can start to work rather than sit dormant upon the moss and not work. (and waste your money)

How stupid of me, of course. Same with paint in that it has a recommended temperature range to use it in.
I'll wait until it warms up a bit then. Thanks

I'd have thought that if the conditions are right for moss growing then it will keep on coming back unless you change the environment (reduce shade/reduce humidity etc), so expect to do this every year.

You could try creating a permenantly 'hostile' environment to stop the moss growing back rather than killing it back every year - for example put a strip of copper (slug tape?) or zinc at the top of the wall - minute quantities of the metals will wash over the wall when it rains and could well discourage the moss from growing back.

Just a thought

I just pressure-wash the affected areas twice a year.

I did that a couple of years ago and managed to wash out a load of the mortar between the bricks so the OH was not amused. I'll try the chemical attack first and then might go back to the pressure washer.
