Hi All,

I have recently been using this site, its excellent to chat to all of you and to read all the interesting stuff.

I have one big question though, i have had my chickens since November, they are ex-bats and i got them from a bat farm, he said they were 18 months, as  id not had chickens before i thought this would be good as they were a bit older and already laying etc etc, plus i saved them :) however as i am really enjoying the whole 'being a chicken keeper' i was wanting to know, how long they are expected to live? and lay for? and when to expect to have to get some younger girls? i know that seems a bit harsh, but im just thinking future plans!

Any advice would be welcome, thanks for all the help so far....

Hi Rich, I don't have ex bats but have read that 3 to 4 is a good age for them.  They are bred as egg laying machines so generally don't last as long as other breeds.  Sure other members will correct me if I have misquoted.

I have 3 chooks, 2 are about 6 and the otheris about a year old. The yougest and 1 of the older ones are laying so I have enough eggs to use. If something was to happen to one of the older ones I might consider getting 2 more, bearing in mind they would be housed seperately to the others.
If you want more eggs you could get more chooks, but choose with care where you get them.

First and foremost your a star for taking on ex-battery hens.
18 months is usually the time when egg production starts to drop off with ex bats, so battery farms tend to get rid of hens at this age.
Their is only a certain amount of eggs in any hen so if egg production drops off the choice is yours, pet or eggs.
Not a easy choice but one you will have to make...Aden...
