Limping hen - no obvious sore /cut areas
« on: October 24, 2011, 14:44 »
Hello all

I have noticed that one of my hens (babs the boss) is limping. She has let me examine her leg and put up no sign of a struggle, or showed any signs it was painful whilst i was feeling her over. There are also no sore looking areas or cuts etc. I have also noticed that the scales are also all lying flat so can rule out leg mite. My local vet has already informed me once that they are NOT chicken friendly so i dont really want to take her there. Are there any useful home remedies any one can recommend?

thanks

Janina

Hi there. Have you also checked her foot and toes? Chickens can get an infection called Bumblefoot which would make her limp.

Hens can also get sprans and strains if they jump from a high place or land awkwardly, so it may be muscular.

Sprains and strains also take a long time to heal properly, so as long as she doesn't seem in too much doscomfort I'd just keep a watchful eye on her over the next few weeks :)

I had this problem with a hen a few years ago and although I cannot say it is the same as your hen mine did recover completely. Assumed it had damaged its leg jumping or tripped what have you :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
