Difference between runner beanss and dwarf beans
« on: June 10, 2021, 15:44 »
Help please. I thought I would be clever and sew one row with one sort of dwarf beanand another row with another.
I also sowed two different sorts in pots to put in the spaces of two rows of beans I sowed  earlier but not all came up.  After these grew a bit I planted them in the spaces.

And therein lies the rub. Today I discovered I had been using one packet of  dwarf beans and another packet of "runner beans" by mistake.

I suppose I can transplant the  runner beans to teepees after a certain stage but I would like to do this quite quickly so I sow some more dwarf beans. So does anyone know how to tell the difference between a runner beans and a dwarf bean in the early stages. Please

I should add they are climbing beans not the perennial sort of bean that grows year after year.
My confusion between the two packets is because the are written in Dutch and I got mixed up between struikbonene (dwarf beans) and stakbonen (climbing or runner beans).

I think the climbing beans are fairly obvious fairly early on, in that they have a longer twining stem that keeps growing.  That being said, I've known dwarf beans that are taller than I expected (still dwarf but perhaps 2 feet tall rather than 18") so you might just need to wait another week or so, maybe
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You may see a difference in the size and shape of the leaves; runners tend to be a little larger.4
