I made some redcurrant jelly 1st time ever.
« on: July 14, 2020, 16:59 »
I have harvested my redcurrants, from 3 bushes I had 5lbs 8oz,so I plucked up the courage and made some red currant jelly,5 jars in total it tastes amazing.
for every pint of liquid I put 12oz of sugar and boiled it to a rolling boil.
Setting point reached jar sterilised.
I am a big novice to jam and jelly making if I can do it anyone can

Well done  :D

Jellies require such patience as you need to let the juice strain through on its own; pushing the berries in order to make the juice strain more quickly, makes the juice go cloudy.

It's so rewarding when you see these jars of jewel red, clear, jelly.  And that's before you even tuck in!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Well done, it’s a good one to start with, I add some port to mine after cooking before bottling that makes it even more delicious in my opinion, lovely stirred into gravy lol. You’ll be getting the bug now & having a go with something else, there’ll be no stopping you  :)

As well as making some redcurrant jelly to go with winter roasts - I often add some cooked and sieved redcurrants to other 'red fruit' jam to improve the set, works a treat :)

I left it to strain over night through a tea towel doubled up,i did not push it through as I believe it makes it cloudy, and to my utter surprise its jewel clear  :).
I did not add any other fruit or booze as I don't have any other fruit, the bad weather saw to that >:(, and I don't drink.
I would like to make other jams but no more fruit on the place well 1 apple and that's it.
I did enjoy making the red currant jelly I was a bit nervous about it though.
